Keep the machine running by merging gears before the gearbox jams.
In Gear Up, you manage a clattering mechanical pit where the goal is to drop gears and merge matching sizes into larger, bulkier components. It is a high-tension physics puzzle where you must constantly fight against a rising pile of metal to prevent a total system failure.
This game is for fans of merge-style physics puzzles who enjoy minimalist aesthetics and the pressure of managing a confined space. If you like the satisfaction of clearing a cluttered screen with a single massive merge, this is for you.

Gear Up Gameplay
The core loop revolves around strategic placement and size matching. You drop gears into the machine, and when two gears of the same size touch, they merge into one larger gear. The bigger the gear, the more space it occupies, creating a precarious balancing act as the gearbox fills with wobbling parts.
The Jam Condition
The primary risk is the ceiling line. If your stack of gears ever reaches the top line, the machine jams instantly, resulting in an immediate game over. You must prioritize merging larger pieces to keep the overall volume of the pile low.
The Spanner Mechanic
To increase the difficulty, the game occasionally drops a "spanner" into your pile. Unlike gears, this tool is useless and cannot be merged. To clear a spanner from the machine, you must trigger exactly 5 merges elsewhere in the pile to remove the obstruction.
Game Controls
- Input Options: Fully compatible with Keyboard, Mouse, Touch, or Controller.
- Action: Aim and release to drop gears into the gearbox.
Pro Tips & Strategies
- Prioritize the Center: Keep your largest gears centered to prevent them from getting stuck against the walls, which can create awkward gaps.
- Chain Reactions: Try to set up gears so that one merge triggers another, helping you clear space rapidly.
- Spanner Management: Don't ignore the spanner; focus on quick, small merges to get rid of it before it blocks your larger gear placements.
Common Mistakes New Players Make
- Ignoring the Ceiling: Waiting too long to merge large pieces. Fix: Always aim to merge the biggest available gears first to drop the pile height.
- Random Dropping: Dropping gears without checking the layout. Fix: Carefully time your drops to land exactly on matching sizes to trigger instant merges.
- Panic Stacking: Dropping gears too quickly when the pile is high. Fix: Slow down; a single misplaced gear can push your stack over the line and end the game.
Why This Game Is Different
- Industrial Obstacles: Unlike standard merge games, the spanner mechanic forces you to achieve specific merge milestones to remove dead weight.
- Extreme Minimalism: The game uses a strict 1-Bit monotone visual style, focusing entirely on shape and movement rather than color.
- Physics-Driven Chaos: The "wobbling, clattering" movement of the gears adds a layer of unpredictability compared to static grid-based puzzles.
